MONDAY SANCTUARY: Research

I'm a research addict. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've sat down to write, popped over to Google to research one tiny tidbit, and then became completely side-tracked for an hour! It's gotten to the point that I will shut off all Internet access, putting it placeholders where needed, just to write.

While research can be daunting, and sometimes a time-suck, it is also my sanctuary. I can get lost in a world of mythology and history. Stunning photos and haunting images can further develop my characters. I can become a stalker with Google Maps, drilling down to view the streets of a town. I mean, you can now view The Colosseum at Rome. Spin around inside. Seriously amazing!!

No matter how much time I spend, research always always, provides me with details and depth. Whether it's for a current project or something I file away for the future.

Is research a necessary evil or a sanctuary for you?

  1. Research is a sanctuary for me too. I can put my brain on autopilot for a bit while I peruse pictures or read about whatever. It's-low stress stuff. But when I incorporate that research into my writing, I definitely have to kick my brain into Alert Mode.

    Great post!

  2. Love to research. Is there a better reason it figure out what ancient people wore or ate or how they lived than to be able to incorporate those tidbits here & there throughout a story?? Good stuff!

  3. Both. I love it but sometimes it takes over. ☺

  4. I'm not a HUGE fan of researching, but once I get started, I can't stop. :)

  5. I get caught up researching things all the time! Whether it's music and bands or mythology or history or books or even something for school, one thing also leads to googling another. Glad to know I'm not the only one with this sanctuary (I refuse to call it a problem ;).

  6. I love researching too! Sometimes I'll get a little sidetracked and end up finding some awesome thing that leads to another story idea. It can be distracting if I'm not careful, but I do love it!

  7. I adore research. I tend to get lost in it, and end sprouting new ideas that take me all over the place. I could easily be an archivist.

  8. Yay!! I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who loves it and gets sucked in.

Off to research more about auras :)
